Physical therapy is helpful in many conditions! It has been called the Most Effective Pain Reliever That Doesn’t Come in a Pill!
Physical therapy is a must after many orthopedic surgeries and helps restoring function to joints, muscles and other soft tissues. Complaints related to accidents with motor vehicles, at work and in sports are common indications for referrals to physical therapy. Neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries may call for the intervention of a physical therapist also.
Finally, babies and young children with developmental delays require the expertise of physical therapists to facilitate movement patterns that aid in the development of the child.
Physical therapy no longer requires doctor’s order...
In May 2004, the governors secured easier access to physical therapists. Previously a physician’s order was needed to consult a physical therapist. The patients should have direct access to services performed by a licensed physical therapist, because they are properly and sufficiently trained to make professional judgment on most musculoskeletal conditions and certain neurological disorders such as stroke, spinal cord injuries etc.
The change of the law may have made the access to physical therapists easier, but that does not mean that the insurance companies have embraced this new ruling. Most insurances, still require a physician’s order prior to considering payment for services provided by a physical therapist. Check with your insurance carrier about their policy.
